Buddhadeb says TMC govt functioning like club

Attack Govt directionless, has no policy, spends time in organising festivals

KOLKATA, 5 August: Within a year of the Trinamool Congress coming to power, Opposition CPM, which had ruled the state uninterruptedly for 34 years, on Sunday called for poriborton (change) by launching an all out attack on Mamata Banerjee government, comparing its functioning with that of a youth club. Interestingly, the Trinamool during its campaign to oust the Left Front government had used the same slogan of poriborton.

Senior CPM leaders, who had gathered to celebrate the 124th birth anniversary of Muzaffar Ahmed — one of the architects of the Communist Party — in Mahajati Sadan at Kolkata, slammed the government for “failing to govern and having no policy”.

“It is very difficult to understand if any government is there in the state. It is better to speak less and less about the functioning of the government. It is a government, which has no policy direction. They are only concerned about painting the railings green and organising festivals. It is all like running a youth club and not a government,’’ said former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Accusing the government of failing on maintaining law and order in the state, Bhattacharjee said anti-social elements are now calling the shots. “Anti-social elements are very happy because they believe their own government has come to power. Incidents of murders, atrocities against women and children are increasing with every passing day. And the government is terming them as canards, conspiracy and concocted. This situation must come to an end,’’ he added.

He alleged that attacks against women, which have surpassed all the records, could have been arrested had there been any political will on the part of the government. “Attempt to shield any crime or disruption of law and order is due to lack of political will of the government,” the senior CPM leader said.

He said the government had failed to attract any investment and there was not a single proposal to set up industry in the state. “Infosys is yet to decide on investing in the state, while there are no proposal for investment in the steel sector after the agreement with the Jindals. Not a single employment opportunity has been created in the IT sector during last one year,” Bhattacharjee said.

“In agriculture, we were the largest paddy growers in the country, but now we are lagging behind. With poor in the villages losing jobs and the workers having no employment opportunity, the progress of the state is under tremendous pressure,” he added.

For his party workers, the CPM leader stressed on the need for going back to the people to counter “this dangerous government”.

Slam match

“During last one year, 74 CPM workers were killed by Trinamool goons. There were as many as 623 cases where our party offices were attacked. 12 party workers were even forced to commit suicide. This govt has failed in all the fronts and we want a change because this cannot go on for long” Biman Bose, CPM state committee secretary said.

“The success that the Left Front government achieved in 34 years with the decentralisation of power has been reverted to total centralisation of power in one person, which is a most unfortunate sign” Nirupam Sen, Former minister said.
